Having survived the crash course that is the first year of being a parent, one fundamental adage I have learnt is ‘never wake a sleeping baby’. So, on our first family road trip through the South Island’s Waitaki district, my husband Ben and I are basing our schedule around our son Gus’s naps. Which means we have no real plans; we’re just going with the flow.
Arriving in Dunedin, we’re enthusiastically dressed for the sub-Antarctic – layer upon layer of wool and thermal underwear. Gus is wearing so many items of clothing he can barely bend his arms. I am astonished to see people wearing shorts and jandals on this frigid morning – clearly they breed them hardy in this part of the world.
