The AA is contracted to the NZ Transport Agency to provide driver licensing products and services. The information below is a guideline to obtaining your learner driver licence at the AA only. Complete, up to date, driver licensing information is available on the NZ Transport Agency website.

How do I renew my photo driver licence?

You need to renew your photo driver licence every 10 years. You should renew your photo driver licence on or before the expiry date. You'll be sent a renewal pack before your driver licence expires*.

Go to your nearest AA Centre, AA Driver & Vehicle Licensing Agent or Rural Mobile Unit to renew your licence**:

  • Take your proof of identity (e.g. existing photo licence)
  • Take your proof of current address (e.g. bank statement***)
  • Bring a $43 renewal fee
  • You'll need to pass an eyesight screening check
  • You'll need to have your photograph taken
    • Allow for queuing during busy times e.g. at lunch time

Driver licence renewal takes around 10 - 15 minutes.

*To ensure you receive your licence renewal pack please inform the NZ Transport Agency if your address has changed.
**The AA cannot process driver licence renewals by phone or online.

How do I replace a lost or stolen driver licence?

Go to your nearest AA Centre, AA Driver & Vehicle Licensing Agent or Rural Mobile Unit to replace your driver licence:

  • Bring your proof of identity (e.g. passport or full birth certificate*)
  • Bring your proof of current address (e.g. bank statement*)
  • Pay $37.40 replacement driver licence fee
