There's really only one way to discover whether a car is any good - you need to live with it. That's not possible for the ordinary buyer, hence this long-term test. We chose Citroen's C4 for its safety rating, its quirky style, and the quality of its diesel engine. Despite those strengths, it's a niche player in a segment dominated by Toyota's Corolla, and crowded with over 40 models. So should you add it to your shopping list? We put it to the real life test.
Our testers were Bob Cook and Julie Mercer from West Auckland, with their children Hazel (3) and Amber (1). The C4 joined their petrol-fuelled Corolla wagon and Mazda 323 for two months.
