AA Driver Education Foundation

The AA Driver Education Foundation (AA DEF) is a non-profit organisation that works to improve driving standards in New Zealand through the promotion of driver education initiatives that result in the highest standards of positive driver attitudes and safe driving behaviour.

We work alongside the New Zealand Transport Agency, Ministry of Transport, ACC, Tranzqual and other industry organisations.

Current initiatives include monitoring the safety of older drivers; facilitating work-related driving and fleet management education, young driver education, research and training; governance of Students Against Driving Drunk (SADD) and engaging with relevant agencies to close gaps in road safety research.

Board

The AA Driver Education Foundation (AA DEF) is a Charitable Trust governed by a Board of Trustees. Board members have long experience as senior AA office holders and/or are recognised experts in New Zealand driver education or the motoring industry.

Frontal Lobe Project

Waikato University and the AA Driver Education Foundation are conducting a world first study on young driver behaviour focusing on frontal lobe brain development - the final Phase 1 report is now available.

Safer Young Drivers

The AA Driver Education Foundation and the New Zealand Transport Agency have released the publication 'Safer Young Drivers: A Guide to Best Practice Education'. The guide's two key aims are to raise the overall standard of road safety education offered to young drivers, and help increase the likelihood that young drivers who participate in road safety education become safer drivers.

Going Solo brochure

The period when any driver is most likely to be involved in a crash is the first 12 months after they start driving on their own. Going Solo shows how parents and novice drivers can reduce the risks faced by restricted licence holders.

CarFit

CarFit is a free programme that helps older drivers adjust their car to be as safe and comfortable as possible.
