What is an `I´ endorsement?
It's an endorsement on your licence that lets you professionally teach other people how to drive. You'll need an `I´ endorsement for every class of driver licence you want to teach. The AA Driving Instructor Training Course focuses on instruction using light motor vehicles (Class 1 driver licence).
How do I apply for an `I´ endorsement?
To apply for `I´ endorsement, you'll need to:
- Complete and submit an application form
- Provide ID and evidence that you've completed the instructor training course
- Pass an eyesight screening check
- Pass the 'fit and proper person' check
- Sit and pass a practical driving test (unless you've successfully completed this test within the last five years)
- Pay the application, vetting and practical driving test fees
- Provide a medical certificate (if applicable)
What is a 'fit and proper person' check?
The NZ Transport Agency will investigate your background including:
- Criminal convictions
- Transport-related offences
- Mental health or behavioural problems
What fees do I have to pay for this endorsement?
There are fees to pay for your application, the vetting process ('fit and proper person') and a practical driving test. If you already hold existing endorsements, some of these fees may not apply.
You can get an `I´ endorsement for either one or five years.
