Rail electrification a big step forward for Auckland’s network – AA

The switching-on of overhead lines into the Britomart Transport Centre today by Prime Minister John Key is an important step forward for the development of Auckland’s transport network, says the AA.

“Keeping this city moving is going to require a modern, efficient and convenient rail network to compliment other modes of transport, and electrification is a big part of that,” said the AA’s Principal Advisor - Infrastructure, Barney Irvine.

“The bottom line is that electric trains will provide a more compelling service, and that is what’s required to get more Aucklanders to choose to use rail.”

Mr Irvine said that AA Members had made their support for better rail and bus services clear.

“Our Members aren’t just motorists, they’re public transport users, pedestrians and cyclists as well,” said Mr Irvine.

“They recognise what most Aucklanders recognise - that better public transport means more options for everyone.”

Mr Irvine added that the AA would continue to push the Government to advance the transport programme in Auckland, through investment in projects that clearly demonstrate they are good value for money. Public transport and investment in walking and cycling facilities, as well as completion of the roading network, all play a critical role, he said.

“In the lead-up to this year’s national election, we’re calling on our politicians to commit to developing Auckland’s public transport,” said Mr Irvine.

“Regardless of which side takes office, we want continued investment in effective, value-for-money public transport projects, and we’ll be holding law-makers to account for this.”
