Hi there,

Sometimes during the past week with all the storm we've been having in Auckland, one of the rubber strips on the roof of my car (Toyota Runx) must've flew off since I noticed it missing this morning.

It wasn't gripping strongly to begin with, it was only held with 2 tabs and once you take the strip off to clean it or to repaint the roof, they never seem to grip like factory anymore.

My question is, do I have to replace it soon ? I'm most likely going to get it from Toyota Galore (toyota specific junkyard) ...but even then that will cost at least $60 if not more.

What is the main purpose of the strip ? I notice that without the strip , water can get around the top-front of windshield ....not leaking in anyways, but there are thin rubber strips on the top of the windshield too..i'm wondering if in the long run rain water can ruin it.

Seems to be one of toyota's main weakness (they dont' have alot tbh)

Thanks in advance !

Mostly, this part is there for cosmetic reasons, however it also minimises moisture getting into the winscreen aperture which can cause rusting, particularly in the lower corners of the windscreen.
There's also a very minimal impact on drag (aerodynamics), but this is so slight as to be of next to no consequence on a car such as this.

Thanks.
How fast can the rust start to form if i leave it without the strip for a few months ?
I mean strip vs rust ..i'd rather replace the strip since rust on the windscreen frame will probably cost a fortune to fix.

Thanks again :)

It would be preferable to replace it sooner rather than later. It's not really possible to say how fast rust can form, but if there are any chips through the paint (which can also be a factor if the windscreen has ever been replaced), this will add to the problem, causing the steel to start rusting quicker than well protected surfaces.
And yes, if rust does form in this area it can be an expensive repair, necessitating the removal of the windscreen and possibly some interior trim items and even the dash in extreme situations.

I have this problem right now. Do AA fix this kind of problem? Or do you know any shop who can? I'm from Wellington. Your reply will be much appreciated. Cheers!

Hi there,
If you are able to obtain a new strip from your vehicle manufacture or parts supplier, you should be able to get a glass service to fit it. AA Auto glass should be able to help 0800 300 120.
