Hi just wondering what type of car it takes to tow a 12ft and under caravan.

Will it work with just any car with a tow bar or do I need a set engine size or weight?

It's a case of weight really, so you need to find out the weight of the caravan. Car manufacturers release information regarding the towing weights for their vehicles. Information is available here on the AA website.
Regardless of manufacturer's recommendations, the law states that a vehicle must be able to stop within 7 meters from 30km/h, so a light weight vehicle will not be safe to tow a very heavy caravan.
