Hi. I have a 2006 Volvo v50 2.4i. I bought this used, running on 225/45r17s. The wheels on it were from a different model Volvo. It is the sport version (which had a 17in option), however I can't be sure they are the same size tyre it left the factory with....and so I can't be sure the factory spacesaver is the correct 'match'. The spacesaver is a 125/85r16 - which has a smaller diameter to the existing tyres (1.54cm smaller in diameter - 2.4% smaller). I understand that spacesavers are meant to be narrower, but I am concerned at the smaller diameter. Is this type of diameter discrepancy usual in a spacesaver? Would it be safe to use (it is a FWD so I would only use the spacesaver on the back). Many thanks.

It is quite common when vehicles get larger wheels, the space saver can be forgotten.
A small change from 17" to a 16" temporary space saver should not create too much of an issue, mainly because a space saver is only designed to be used as a temporary measure to get you to a place of repair. Ultimately it would be ideal to match the spare with the rest of the wheel diameters, however you may not even fit a 17" wheel in the space provided.
If in doubt, consult a tyre specialist like your local Bridgestone centre.
