I remember in old days, when you wanted to buy a car, the owner normally can produce a piece of paper , it stated the name , how many owners, when did the car purchased, at how many km.....I called it ownership paper , but probably certificate of registration is the right name, but seems not anymore . So if I want to buy a car , I want to know if the person selling the car is the owner or not, how long has he had it for , and how many km when he bought it , where could I find information, many thanks

Hi there,
The registered keeper of the vehicle document has a small amount of information listed on it.
But mostly you will need to purchase a vehicle history report, but du to the privacy act private owner names won't be listed only dealers or companies. http://www.aa.co.nz/cars/buy-sell/car-history-checks-and-reports/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI4eiI-JGw1gIV1AMqCh0h4AdVEAAYASAAEgJJMvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

Thank you for your reply, but you still did not tell me if the ownership paper still in use, I think that paper has all the information I want to know. does that mean nowadays I have to pay for those info?

The traditional ownership paper is no longer in use. Yes you have to pay for information about a vehicle as a report. Ownership proof is a contract and money exchange, the NZTA register is now called "registered keeper" so they know who is in charge of the vehicle and where tickets and renewal notices need to be sent. This can often be depicted as an ownership paper.
