I am planning on buying a C200 estate. I saw one which was a Japanese import 2011 model at $41k and another demonstrator at $55k. Seems like a good price as they both drive really nice.

Do these models have known issues? Is cost of maintenance very much more than Japanese makes? What are the long term issues?

I am keen on a European station wagon. If not the C200, are there other makes/models you would suggest I look at?

Thanks.

As far as European wagons go, the C200 is a relatively safe bet, with no known major reliability issues. It's comfortable and safe, but not overly complex like some of the bigger and more hi-tech vehicles in the range.
IIf the budget runs to it, the ex-demo NZ New example is absolutely the one to go for. You have factory warranty, be the first private owner, know the history and be better taken care of by the Mercedes-Benz dealer.
Yes, service and maintenance will be quite a bit higher than a Japanese vehicle - especially if you service at the main dealer, which is what I'd recommend while the car is under warranty.
The obvious competitor would be the BMW 320i Touring, which is an equally good car.

Thanks for that.

One more question I have. I see most European vehicles have a turbo while most Japanese vehicles don't. What is the difference in terms of long term reliability and maintenance between a vehicle with a turbo and one without. Is there anything I should look out for a worry about when buying a vehicle with a turbo?

Turbocharging has become much more mainstream and much more reliable in recent times. It's not just about power, but also environmental/emission standards and efficiency.
Critical considerations are to service the vehicle in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendation and to ensure the correct recommended fuel is used.
Generally speaking, reliability is not an issue with modern turbocharged engines.
