Hi there, I'm currently looking at upgrading from a sedan to a station wagon (or compact SUV). Basically I need a big-ish boot to accommodate a growing dog, and would be keen to hear some opinions.

I'd like to get something relatively modern (i.e. 2010+) with some mod-cons I currently don't have, like bluetooth music streaming and cruise control. Preferably petrol, as I do mainly short trips and have heard some concerning stories about DPF filters clogging etc.

So far I've tried the current generation Hyundai i30 wagon, and I really liked it - just a bit longer than the hatchback and has quite a large boot and plenty of bells and whistles, I just worried that the engine (1.6L petrol) might be a bit small for occasional longer trips with any steep hills.

Aside from that, the Ford Focus wagon is probably next on the list, the boot is a bit smaller, seems to be only slightly more powerful than the Hyundai, but seems to get rave reviews everywhere I've looked, particularly for it's handling (not yet taken one for a spin).

Any thoughts on the above, or other similar cars would be appreciated!

There are a number of compact wagons such as those you mention. The i30 wagon would be a good choice. With manufacturers now downsizing and getting more power from smaller engines, I wouldn't be put off by the capacity. Likewise, as you've identified, the Focus is a really good driver's car, with a great chassis and handling/dynamics.
Volkswagen's Golf wagon and the Corolla Wagon could be others to consider.
Like the Focus, the Golf is also an excellent driver's car and while it's a little less "interesting" than the others, the Corolla has a deservedly excellent reputation for reliability.
Basically, as you are looking at late model vehicles, reliability shouldn't be an issue with any of these models, so try them all and go for the model you like the most.

Thanks for the quick reply! Yes, I'm going to find a Focus wagon to try out. We've got some Corolla wagons at work and they're definitely not the prettiest or most exciting to drive - but the reliability aspect is a plus.
