VW are currently running a special on the Golf and I would be grateful for your thoughts on the model which would appear from reviews to be well built. Are there any reliability problems that you know of and are spares & servicing costs generally reasonable ?

Regards , Bill.

We have been very impressed with the late model Golf. Certainly, earlier Golfs from the late '90s & early 00's had their reliability issues, mainly with electrics, throttle bodies and automatic transmissions.
These issues seem to have been resolved on later models, although one thing to be aware of is that the TSI engine must be run on 95 octane fuel, otherwise we have heard of piston damage occuring. But if treated well, serviced and maintained in accordance with manufacturer's guidelines (including using the correct fuel), the Golf is a great driver's car and should provide enjoyable, reliable motoring.
VW in New Zealand have recently established a huge parts warehouse locally, so spares should not be a problem.
Routine servicing and maintenance costs shouldn't be unreasonable.
