Hi, I am looking at purchasing a 2006 Nissan Wingroad but a friend has raised concerns about the 1500cc engine. It will mainly be used for around town and short trips, but the odd longer trips with two children and luggage In the back will it be fine or would something abit bigger be more suitable?

I don't think the engine would be a problem, although the CVT automatic transmission is known to give trouble.
This is usually reflected in the price, with the Wingroad seeming to offer good value for a vehicle of its age.
While a good service history, transmission fluid changes and solid maintenance record can offer some peace of mind, personally I'd prefer something perhaps a year or two older but with a better reliability record.
Perhaps a Toyota Corolla wagon, Mazda Axela or a similar mainstream Japanese model with a conventional automatic transmission (ie; not CVT from this era) would be a better option.
