Hi there,
I was recently looking at a 1988 BMW 320i Touring. However when I looked it up on CarJam it appeared as a 1995 BMW 320 touring. Details below:
VIN: WBAAH520903818040
Plate: JLW831
Engine No: 23344425
What are your thoughts on this? How might this have happened? It has been de registered and re registered in the past. If I bought it what would I need to do?
I have talked to the owner but he does not know why this is the case.

The vehicle may have been re registered as a 1995, which is strange if it isn't a 95.
Is it advertised as an 1988?, what identifies it as an 88?.
I would take special care, as to looking into the reason for it to have been de-registered and re-registered. Has the vehicle been a write-off? Maybe carryout an AA vehicle history check. May just be a typo or something strange is going on.

Yes I think it has been re registered as a 1995. Very strange. Is it something that would need to be fixed?
It's definitely a 1988 or around then as the 1995 model looks completely different. It is advertised as a 1988.
Will a history check tell me why it has been re-registered? I'm pretty sure it doesn't but happy to be wrong.
If it has been written off and then re-registered is this an issue?

I don't think it would pose too much of an issue, may be a task to change it. I think something strange has gone on and would be very wary of buying such a vehicle. You would need an explanation as to why it would be advertised as an 88 but registered as a 95.
A history check may warn you of the registration as been cancelled and re-registered but not specifically if it was written off. There is an example on our website.
A pre purchase inspection may highlight any repaired damage if there is any to see.

Just had another thought, the build date may be 1988 but first registered date may be 1995 and that is what is on the registration list.
