I bought a 09 Kia Picanto sport a few months back...good car but doesn't really suit me.
...so I'm reconsidering.
I once drove an 05 golf that was a joy! I realise parts will be more expensive, but are they any less reliable. Id prefer a diesel for fuel ecomomy. Any problems that stand out and should inspect? Budget is 9k preferable

I've not received any complaints about the golf diesel. It looks like the diesel may only available NZ new, so you will have a better chance to look into the history of the vehicle, including servicing.
I would however pay attention to the transmission servicing and operation as they could potentially be a weak point on some. Maybe even speak with a transmission specialist to see if they have encountered common problems.
