I wish to sell my car. I'd like to keep my current number plates for the new vehicle.
What's the process (and cost) for issuing my current vehicle with new Govt issue plates and registering my new vehicle with the current plates.

Thanks

Hi there,
Unless you have personalised plates, this is not possible.
If you have personalised plates, you can take them off the vehicle and purchase new govt plates, costing around $20. Then when you have a new car, you can do the same, but get your personalised plates activated along with a new registration label.

Cheers.
I don't know the origin of my plates. They came on the car but happen to be appropriate.
How do I establish whether they were standard issue or personal?
The plate is 3 letters then a single digit number. does this tell us anything?

Hi there,
The plate may be one of the first in the batch of plates changed over to that particular letter combination. The NZTA should be able to tell you if it is a government issue or not.
