Hi there,
Toyota CVT transmissions are a "1-speed" type and don't seem to give too many problems.
The factor to look into is the direct injection engines, identified by the code FSE. The 2.0ltr engines on these three cars are FSE and I recommend you stay away from them , as they have been known to give trouble at times. Some say they smoke and clog up the intake system, due to the specific design of the engines in the time period you are looking at.

Any idea on what make or model to look at that is reliable? on a 5k-9k budget for a seven seater?

Hi Tim,

Have you looked at the Mazda Premacy? I was looking for something similar about 4 years ago and were recommended by AA to have a look at the Premacy. I have had one since and reluctant to sell or upgrade as it's perfect. Never had any issues at all apart from a common issue with an engine mount which is cheap as chips and can be replaced at home by uncliping the water bottle, supporting the motor with a jack and 3 bolts - done 10 minutes. It's big enough for everything. Tow's the trailer and a jetski for holidays and fun. I have only heard good things about the MPV too if you are looking for something slightly bigger.
