I am looking at upgrading my current car, and have been looking at the option of an Audi A3.
The cars I have seen have done kilometers around ~60k and are imports from Japan.
The model of the A3's I am interested in is the variation with the 1.6 engine.

I understand that European cars cost more to service and repair. I look after my current car (Japanese - Nissan), regularly checking fluids, oil etc and question things that seem abnormal with my mechanic and family, which I thought may help :)

Is there anything to be aware of and look out for with Audi A3 cars of this model and age?
(Common issues electronically and mechanically?)

My concern is the service history of the car in Japan (which may come with the car or is there a way to check?), the automatic transmission (could it be CVT or just standard automatic), would 60,000kms and onward present expected repairs/maintenance.

I also understand that Japanese cars are well known for their reliability, but things like extra airbags, safety features and different styling are more present on European cars.

If this seems like a bad idea, would you recommend a better choice (Japanese or European, preferably European)?

Sorry for the long question!

On a side note, would you happen to know if the 2006 Audi A3 1.6 engine has a cam chain or belt?

Hello this model appears to have a traditional automatic transmission, it also still uses a cambelt as well, if this has not been changed yet it may be wise to do so due to its age.

If you are considering a European vehicle and understand that there may be extra costs involved you probably have good reason for it. Japanese and European vehicles are quite different and offer different things so it depends what you are after.

As for any issues yes, usually from lack of maintenance, if you purchased this vehicle I would give it a full service transmission oil change and cambelt, Discuss these costs with your mechanic before hand and use this as a bargaining tool when negotiating the price
