Hi, I have just had two new tyres fitted. Before buying I seem to remember being told the new tyres should go on the front as the front tyres do all the work.. They have been fitted to the back.
When I queried this I was told that it is safer to have the new ones at the rear as one drives to the quality of the front tyres. Also if you go into a skid, or have to brake hard, it is better to have the new tyres at the rear as the front of the car will go down and the back lift and maybe slew. Having the new tyres at the back will give more grip.

Which is correct please? The vehicle is a Toyota Avensis station wagon. Many thanks.

The tyre shop is correct - new tyres should go on the rear, regardless of the car being front or rear wheel drive. The reasons the tyre shop have given you are correct, also the car is less likely to get into a slide (the rear spinning out of control) if the rear tyres are of good quality.

Many thanks for clarifying.
