We've been shopping for a used mazda 6 (2008-2012), and my regular mechanic warns me that these have a bad reputation for issues with rust coming from underneath the paint on the roof. He says it first starts with "spiderweb" like spots which look almost like stone chips, except coming from underneath, and that it progresses from there. Even worse, he says that even a full roof repaint isn't enough, and that it often comes back! Can you shed any light on these problems?

This is a new one on us and it's not something we're aware of at all on late model Mazda product, although early Mazda 626s from the 1980s did suffer from rust problems such as this.
