I have heard that the Honda CRV is not actually designed for towing due to the construction or the car. I am looking at buying a CRV with a tow bar. Is there any way that I can inspect the car to establish if it has pulled too much weight?

The CRV is rated by Honda at 1,200kg or 1,600kg (depending on the year) for braked trailers, so it is perfectly OK to tow with a CRV. There's nothing much you can check to see whether it has towed or not.
