Hi there,
I'm in the market for a used car and am considering a Hyundai i30 hatch. Reliability is paramount for me - what's your take on this car vs the good old Toyota Corolla hatch? I'll be buying for around $8000-9000. Also, how do the Hyundai Accent and the Ford Focus (my other two prospects) stack up?
And do you recommend avoiding imported used cars?
Thanks SO much!

The Hyundai i30 as well as the Toyota Corolla in this price range are good choices. The vehicles in this price range/age to avoid are those fitted with a CVT transmission as they have a poor reputation for reliability. Another vehicle to consider is the Mazda3/Axela.

Thank you. And what's your take on imported vehicles? To avoid or not to avoid?

I don't have a problem with used imports but you need to consider having a full service done on the vehicle as you will not have any traceable service records. Also, whether you are considering purchasing NZ new or used imports a Pre-Purchase Inspection should be considered to give you a good idea of the vehicle's condition. Buying from a Registered Motor Vehicle Trader is a safer option too.
