Hi

I just got a 2001 Mazda Capella, it came in pretty good conditions with the 2.0l automatic engine. Now, after 250 Km of nice driving it started behaving strangely... if I let the accelerator go while in 4th gear when the car reaches 60kmh it will start revving (from 1000rpm to 1500rpm) and so moving in a sort of hiccup until it reaches 50kmh, then keeps decelerating normally until finally it shifts to 3rd and so on...

I tried tonight to let the accelerator go at 90kmh down a gentile slope, and when it reached 60, it revved 12 times before being able to go under 50... it very annoying and I'm pretty sure is not good for the engine...

Any idea on what could it be?

Thanks!!

Hi there,
It sounds like a possible idle control or throttle position fault.
You will need to take the car to an AA technician in your area to get it checked, and correcty diagnosed.
Could be simple as cleaning out the intake system, or throttle sensor replacement.

Thanks Cade,
In fact I'm popping in at the manukau aa just now, I hope it's an easy fix... Finger crossed

It came out is not simple at all.... after two unproductive diagnostics at AA they sent me to a Transmission expert in Rotorua.
Apparently the torque converter needs to be changed because the small "clutch" inside that is supposed to hold the discs together when the RPM are constant is now "glazed" and not getting much friction.
Very expensive to fix and very not worth it....

Thanks anyway, I'm leaving this here if others have similar problems
