Does a timing chain on a 96 Vitara/Escudo V6 need to be replaced at certain km's or only if it is rattling? Have been told by one mechanic it needs changing regardless or km's or could destroy the engine but another said not to do it unless it is rattling. Cost of replacement is quite high given value of the vehicle so don't want to do it if not necessary but don't want to wreck it either. Is $1,800 for replacement a fair pricel? Thanks

Hi there,
The benefit of timing chains are that they are usually good for the life of the vehicle.
However some are prone to stretching and becoming noisey, more so when the km's are getting high. From memory this can also ocasionally cause the vehicle to run rough.
If this is the case, then I would look at getting the chains replaced.
It is a very big job and there are 3 chains to replace.
$1800 sounds like a very reasonable price for the job.
