I purchased brand new VW Golf back in 2011 (auto-petrol). Currently done 63,000 k's. I've been told there are gearbox/clutch and flywheel issues. VW NZ are happy to fix clutch issues at no cost to me. But quote to fix flywheel at same time is over $2000. I Have no mechanical knowledge, so are the two issues related? Could the faulty gearbox/clutch cause the flywheel to need replacing?

Hi there,
Is this the DSG model?.
As the vehicle is now out of warranty, the dealer may be carrying out a "goodwill" claim.
This is good for you, however it does seem strange that the flywheel is not included.
We are unsure of the nature of the problem on whether the transmssion faults could have any impact on the flywheel or not. Ask them to explain why this is not the case and what would cause the flywheel to need repair.

Thanks. Yes - Its the DSG model
I raised two issues when I took it in for a service
1) at low speeds - when accelerating it was shuddering - i.e. wasn't smooth
2) clear loud clicking sound from engine area. Could be heard within car in Drive - but with foot on brake. Eg at traffic lights.
Responses back from workshop.
Issue 1 relates to gearbox/clutch
Issue 2 relates to flywheel
I've already requested something in writing explaining why they are covering gearbox issue and not flywheel. Could the fault in the gearbox have caused the flywheel issue.
Thanks again.

Hi there,
The shuddering of a dsg transmission is very common and may even be classed as a characteristic of the vehicle.
The dealer would know if the two issues are linked and explain their reasoning for the outcome.
Any assistance the dealer is giving you as a goodwill, as your vehicle is out of its warranty period.
