I just bought a 2006 Toyota Voxy, with the 2 litre 1AZ-FSE engine. I'm disappointed with the economy (lack of), it uses about 10 l/100km for general running, and about 7.5 l/100km on a trip. Going off published fuel use figures I wasn't expecting it to use only about 10 to15% more than my 1500 FunCargo, which uses about 7.5 l/100km for general running, not 30% more. I've replaced the air filter element. What elece can I check. Is there any point taking it to an engine tuning place? Any recommendations? Thanks

Hi there,
This is the Toyota D4 direct injection engine, and is known to give issue.
From what i hear, they clog up the intake system. I would recommend taking it to a technician whos knows about these engines to best inform you on what to do. Maybe a Toyota tech will know.
We usually recommend people to stay away from the D4 engines as they do have issues more often that not.

Thanks for your reply. I'm surprised to hear these engines have a bad reputation, they're fitted to quite a range of Toyotas. What sort of technician should I try to find? A dyno tuning place? An auto electrician? Any recommendations as to where to start?

I would talk to a toyota dealer to start with and explain the symptoms.
They should be able to advise the best possible cause of the higher fuel consumption
and find out if your car has any intake issues.
