Hi, I am looking at upgrading from my 98 Rav4 to a 2002 NZ new model. I have done some research and see that there was a big issue with the autotransmissions on the 2002 models. Does anyone know about this problem and how do I know if the 2002 Rav I am considering has had the fault fixed. The vehicle has done 260 000 Kms and the owner says he hasn't had any problems with the tranny, when I drove it it felt fine also.

Hi there, yes these vehicles from 2000- 2008 had very problematic transmission faults particularly the transmission computer. If it hasn't had any repairs yet, it is one of the few and possibly could be a good one, but not guaranteed. They say it usually starts with an oxygen sensor fault code.

I recommend you contact a transmission specialist, I'm not sure if you can identify if it has had repairs, apart from what the owners informs you.
