I have a 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer which has just developed the above mentioned fault. My mechanic who diagnosed the fault advised that this was a known fault with this make and model.
I have contacted my local Mitsubishi agent whom I purchased the second hand vehicle from but they didn't want know.
My question is that as the ABS is a part of Braking system thus it is a safety issue and as it is a known fault with the make and model surely Mitsubishi must have some obligation to rectify or assist with rectifying the fault

Hi there,
How long have you owned the vehicle for?.
If you've not had the vehicle long, you may have some rights from the selling dealer under the CGA. One question to ask, is this type of fault acceptable when considering the condition, age, mileage and price paid when I purchased this vehicle?. More information can be found: https://www.consumeraffairs.govt.nz/get-guidance/cars-and-motoring/solving-issues-with-your-car-dealer/
An 8 year old vehicle is long out of warranty and the manufacture would have no responsibility to repair for free, unless it was part of a recall.

Thanks for your prompt response.
Whilst I appreciate it is well out of its warranty being a known fault and a safety issue I consider there should be some obligation on the manufacturer.
Where is the line drawn between a known fault and a recall regardless of the vehicles age - thanks for taking the time to respond

I too have a 2008 Lancer that has just developed the same problem. I have been quoted by my Mitsubishi agent $1580+ GST for a new ABS unit with a two year warranty or $900+ GST for a recon unit with 3 month warranty I have been advised to avoid the recon unit by an independant advisor. Labour is extra. My vehicle was bought new from Mitsubishi and has only covered 20,000km in the eight years I have owned it. It would appear then that this is an age related fault rather than a mileage related fault as I guess lostdogs vehicle is of higher mileage than mine. I assume it is faulty materials used for seals or somesuch that deteriorate after time. In my case the vehicle has been serviced yearly by the dealers from new even though the mileage was low so it is not a lack of servicing problem. I have been told that this is a widespread problem with these vehicles as the agents carry the parts to repair them as a matter of course. I feel, like lostdog, that Mitsubishi should front up to sort this problem and while having to get the repair done I intend to approach Mitsubishi NZ and the MTA to this effect. Are there any other Lancer owners out there who feel the same?
Cade, do you feel that such an approach by Lancer owners will be of any help?

Hi there,
My suggestion is to present all the information through the dealer, who then can present the issues at head office level. They can then speak with the manufacturer in Japan as to whether recourse is an option.

Hi, I sent an email to Mitsubishi NZ 2 days ago and have yet to get a response.

Hi lostdog. I've just had the fix with the new pump and am waiting for the invoice to come in and will be contacting Mitsubishi NZ as well as soon as I have all the details. Will comment here after I receive a response from them.

Hi Ruger, I've yet to receive a response from Mitsubishi New Zealand. Whilst I acknowledge what Cade has to say regarding the age of the vehicle I believe that Mitsubishi have
responsibility as it is a known fault. I intend to contact the MTA Mediation Service to discuss.
