Good morning,

the sump plug in my 2003 ford falcon XR6 has been stripped by a previous owner and they have tried to remedy this by putting a slightly bigger bolt in but clearly this isn't a permanent fix.

I'm aware that it is possible for a mechanic to rethread it but my main concern is if they get metal shavings inside of the sump.

What would you suggest I do?

Thanks

Robert

Hi there,
If you are careful, there should be no reason you can't repair in place, usually you would put a larger thread in and sump plug. However there is a limit to this before you run out of steel to create a new thread in. To clean out the sump you can use a magnet and a bit of spare oil to flush through and take any contaminates with it.
Sometimes the only option is to remove the sump in order to carryout the repair properly.
