Hi there, I am wanting some advice around purchasing a small, city car to transport myself and my 2 children in an approx 10-20km radius from our home.

I would like to know what costs I should budget for and if you might be able to give ballpark figures?

I know there is WOF, Registration, Insurance, Maintenance and fuel. Am I missing anything?

Preferably I am looking for something under 1500cc, from the year 2000 onwards (so that I may access that yearly WOF requirement), easy to repair and with relatively common/inexpensive replacement parts. It also needs to have at least one child restraint anchor point or the ability for me to have one installed.

What is a good, economical, small car that is easy/relatively inexpensive to run and maintain yet will be safe for us?

The budget for this car will be between $2,000.00 & $4,000.00.

I will be wanting full insurance and I am (obviously) an AA member.

Do you have any recommendations?

Thank you for your time, I look forward to your reply.

Hi there,
A few cars that come to mind and might fit the bill, would be the Mazda Demio, Toyota Vitz, Subaru Impreza and Nissan march.
I think you have the vehicle running costs outlined, I can't think of much else. Maybe ask about servicing and if/when cambelt, coolant or driveline fluids were least replaced.
You may need to think if you prefer to buy privately or through a dealer (CGA cover) and if you want to get a pre purchase inspection to minimise the risk of unforeseen problems.
