Hi,

I recently bought a 2011 Mazda Axela 2.0l Automatic Hatchback. It has the Skyactiv engine and iStop.

Since it was Jap import it has no manual, from ones I could see online they say to run those engines on 91 unleaded. Dealer however, told me to definately only use 95 or 98.

I have seen a few other questions here for other model years with most saying 91 but some higher octane, and I also read that most Mazda 3's for Australasia of this vintage are 91 but some overseas cars (such as the Axela) were designed for 95 or higher.

Which to use please?! Will 91 be fine for the engine (with some slight performance decrease and slightly higher consumption noted) or stick with 95? Thank you!

Hi there,
Sorry for the delay, not sure how this question got missed.
Our specs for this vehicle show unleaded, which generally means 91 as is common for a Japanese vehicle. Sometimes the only noticeable difference between 91 and 95 is the extra cost to buy the fuel. The NZ new Mazda 3 2.0ltr is also listed as being 91 octane compatible.
