What exactly does the white cross hatching on roads mean? You often see them before right-turn lanes or at the sides of roads and sometimes on corners.
In practice, drivers seem to treat them as if they were just areas delimited by white lines - queuing, driving or even stopping as if they were not there. If that were the law, it would be an awfully expensive waste of paint.
Is there an official meaning and if so, is it enforced?

Hi there,
This is known as a flush median, and is able to be driven in for a short amount of time for certain vehicles turning, entering or exiting a roadway.
