We want to get a towbar fitted to our car which is rated for 3,500kg. We only want to be able to tow a small boat so don't need a 3,500kg towbar. Are there any regulations about fitting a towbar rated lighter than the car is capable of towing? will we have problems getting a WOF if we've say got a 1,500kg towbar on a car rated for 3,500kg?

This situation has come about because the towbar industry is not regulated in New Zealand. Personally, I'm not in favour of fitteing a lower rated bar than the vehicle manufacturer states because if you sell the vehicle, who's to know what rating the towbar has?
So while it's not illegal, if you use one of the more reputable towbar suppliers such as Best Bars they will only fit a towbar that matches the vehicle manufacturer's recommendation.

Great, thanks for the advice!
