Hi there,

I have held my restricted licence for about 4 months. My grandparents are currently residing (long-term) in Nz and they both hold full overseas drivers licence for 5+ years. They do not hold NZ licence and are hesitant driving in NZ. Due to illness I may need to drive them around from time to time to appointments etc. As "Grandparents" are not permitted passengers under the restricted licence, would they be considered "Supervisors" provided a translation of their licence is obtained so I can drive them legally? (I have checked and their overseas licence cannot be directly converted to NZ licence without tests).
I have considered applying for an exemption if they aren't considered to be supervisors. Would things like doctors certificate and proof unable to access public transport give me a better chance at getting the exemption?

Cheers

I think all the senarios you mention seem questionable. If they convert their licences, they will not have held a full NZ licence for 2 years, so probably rules that out.
I think its unlikely you would get an exemption, unless you are their full time live-in caregiver. As they are overseas visitors, I can't see this being the case.
You could call NZTA Helpdesk on 0800 699 000 to see if any of your suggestions would be considered, but personally, I think the chances are low.
