Generally every school has a 40km/hr speed sign around the area in which it was placed but I was wondering, is it still 40km/hr from 10am-2pm or does it return to 50 km/hr during these hours as children should not be exiting the school during these times. Does the speed limit of 40 km/h also take place during the school holidays or does it resume to 50km/h like a residential area?

Hi there, from what I can see you are correct, when no longer required the zone may revert to normal road speeds if the variable speed signs are used.

Here is a small excerpt:
School speed zones are in force throughout Auckland with a 40km/h speed limit in operation on school days. They operate at least 35 minutes before the start of school and 20 minutes at the end of the school day. They begin no earlier than 5 minutes before the end of the school day.

The speed limit will also apply for 10 minutes at any other time when at least 50 children cross the road, or enter or leave vehicles at the roadside. Appropriate signs mark the beginning and end of the area where the speed limit operates.

Please ensure that you drive to the conditions and slow down near schools.
