A couple of price increases in late October have seen petrol prices rise a total of 4 cents per litre, with diesel up 5cpl. Petrol prices are now the highest they’ve been since February, while this is the first time diesel has been over $1.40/litre since November 2014 – excluding many parts of the North Island where prices continue to be discounted.

The increase is due to a combination of the falling NZ$, which has dropped 2c since in the past three weeks, while commodity prices have also risen a couple of cents, meaning the landed cost of fuels have risen over 4cpl since the last price change on 10 October (when pump prices fell).

A few prices changes in early October, with diesel initially rising 3 cents per litre on 6 October before both petrol and diesel prices fell 2cpl on 10 October. In both cases the price changes are a little hard to understand compared to the landed cost of refined fuels – the imported cost of diesel hadn’t risen but then neither did the landed cost fall to explain the later cut (in fact it rose slightly due to a 1c drop in the NZ$). It seems there’s been a little price jostling within the fuel co’s – and margins are still comfortably high.
