1 Prepare for learners

16 yrs

You must be 16 or older to take your theory test.

2 Learners

16 yrs

You must be 16 1/2 or older and have held a learner licence for at least 6 months to take your restricted practical test.

You can’t drive on your own and your supervisor must sit in the front with you - they must have had their full licence for 2 years or more.

You must display L plates.

3 Restricted

16 1/2 - 18 yrs

with a Defensive Driving Course

You can only drive between 5am and 10pm on your own.

Passengers must have a full licence unless they are your children, spouse or parent.

You have to hold your restricted for 12 months (if you've been to a DDC) or 18 months (without doing a DDC) if under 25 before taking your full.

4 Full

18 yrs

-6 months
with a Defensive Driving Course

If you are over 25 you must hold your restricted for 3 months (if you've attended a DDC) or 6 months (without a DDC) before taking your full test.
