Basic handling skills test (BHST)

PLEASE NOTE: AA MOTORCYCLE TRAINING IS CURRENTLY ONLY AVAILABLE IN SELECTED AREAS OF THE BAY OF PLENTY AND WAIKATO REGIONS. WE PLAN TO ROLL OUT MOTORCYCLE TRAINING AND TESTING NATIONWIDE AT A LATER DATE.

What you will need to bring:

  • Payment and photo ID
  • Long trousers with good protection
  • Long sleeve jacket with good protection (front fastening preferably)
  • Sturdy footwear
  • Wet weather gear if necessary
  • Gloves (we can supply)
  • Approved safety helmet (we can supply)
  • We will supply the motorcycle

 

The test is 30 minutes long

Before you apply for your learner motorcycle licence you need to pass this basic handling skills test. The test will make sure that you are a rider that is capable of riding safely on the road once you get your learner motorcycle licence.

The BHST consists of four stages:

  • basic turn and stop
  • figure of eight and park
  • linking figures of eight
  • increased speed and an emergency stop

To complete the above stages, you need to perform the following tasks:

  • move off
  • straight ride
  • corner
  • stop
  • park

To successfully complete the above tasks, you will be assessed on the following:

  • looking in the correct direction
  • signalling correctly
  • making head checks before changing position
  • lateral position of motorcycle
  • control of motorcycle
  • using appropriate speed
  • parking observation
  • parking movement
