Bridal stories at Te Papa

By Jo Percival

Princess, meringue or sheath. Lace, tulle or silk. Ivory, cream, or maybe even... white. For centuries the wedding dress has been one of Western society’s cultural landmarks and a barometer of fashion trends.

Te Papa’s upcoming exhibition will unveil the history of the wedding dress, from the early 1800s through to the 21st century.

Unveiled: 200 Years of Wedding Dress will showcase bridal garments from London’s Victoria and Albert Museum, looking at the stories behind each dress and how they reflect the economic, cultural and social mores of each era.

A couture creation from Vivienne Westwood, worn by burlesque dancer Dita Von Teese, and Gwen Stefani’s wedding dress, designed by John Galliano, will sit alongside museum pieces, vintage menswear from British Savile Row tailors, plus veils, corsetry, millinery and shoes.

To add local flavour, Te Papa has commissioned garments by three of New Zealand’s top designers – WORLD; former Supreme Winner at Westfield Style Pasifika, Lindah Lepou; and acclaimed bridal wear designer Jane Yeh.
