Advice on finding the best spot for your tent, making yourself comfortable, and the things you should bring to give you the best camping experience possible.
Tenting tips
- A dependable tent is the cornerstone of any happy camping trip. Buy the best one you can afford
- Choose a site with a bit of shade, and shelter from the prevailing wind (a strategically parked car will help)
- Pitch on high ground away from the edges of rivers and streams
- Check for stones, sticks and any sharp objects that could pierce the ground sheet or poke you in the ribs
- Make the most of your site. Pitch your tent in one corner, then put up an awning, gazebo or sun umbrella; add outdoor furniture and you have an alfresco lounge
- Make yourself a comfortable bed. Proper bedding and a decent pillow make a big difference
Don't leave home without:
- torches and spare batteries
- matches/lighters
- sunblock and sun hat
- insect repellent
- first-aid kit
- mobile phone
- tent repair kit/duct tape
- raincoats
- walking boots/shoes
- picnic blanket

Make it even better with…
- chilly bin or three-way fridge
- outdoor furniture
- sun shade or gazebo
- fairy lights
- barbecue
- wine, chocolate and a coffee plunger
- music or a musical instrument
- bikes
- playing cards, games, bat, ball and lilo
