Learner driver licences

The first step in New Zealand’s three-step graduated driver licensing system (GDLS) is getting your learner licence.

The information below is a guide to getting your learner licence.

Applying for your learner licence through the AA

Visit your nearest AA Centre, AA Driver & Vehicle Licensing Agent or Rural Mobile Unit.

On 27 February 2012 the driver licence tests changed.

Bring evidence of identity, e.g. passport or full birth certificate
Bring evidence of your address, e.g. bank statement
Pay the fee
Pass an eyesight screening check
Have your photograph taken
Book your computerised theory test (please note: we can't accept phone or email bookings for the test)

Learner driver licence test eligibility

After the theory test

If you pass your learner driver licence (computerised) theory test you'll be given a temporary driver licence and you can buy learner L plates (which are available from any AA driver licensing outlet). You can also practice driving with an AA Driving Instructor or a supervisor.

If you don't pass your learner driver licence test, you can re-sit the test an unlimited number of times. You will need to bring proof of identity, complete a new application form and pay the test fee for each test re-sit.
