Approved by the NZ Transport Agency, the "I" Endorsement Driving Instructor Training Course is based on NZQA unit standards, is completed over eight days and includes:

  • Pre-course reading (essential for your success)
  • In-class theory-based training and assessments
  • Demonstrations and practical in-vehicle coaching techniques
  • Practical appraisals of your tuition and assessment skills

Once you've successfully passed this course, you’ll be able to apply for the "I" Endorsement and start work as a Driving Instructor.

After the course

You'll have an in-depth knowledge of New Zealand's driver licensing system, road rules and an overview of the legal aspects governing the driver training industry.

You'll have learned tangible Driver Instructor teaching skills, including:

  • Different learning techniques
  • Dynamics of light motor vehicles
  • Laws of physics governing vehicle motion and inertia
  • Hazard detection and response
  • Driver analysis
  • Developing driver training plans

  • Unit 3466 - Apply risk reduction techniques and strategies while driving
  • Unit 14511 - Describe knowledge required by driver educators of road transport legislation
  • Unit 14521 - Observe and analyse a person's driving and determine ways to achieve required performance
  • Unit 14523 and 16646 - Develop and follow through on individual driver training plans and carry out in-vehicle driver training
  • Unit 16647 - Describe implications for driver educators of factors that affect people's learning
  • Unit 20179 - Describe light motor vehicle dynamics and handling characteristics
  • Unit 20180 - Demonstrate knowledge of hazard detection and responses

Driver Instructor Course enrolment

Enrolment requirements

You'll need to have held a full New Zealand driver's licence for two years or more.

Once you've passed the course you'll need to be assessed by NZ Police as a 'fit and proper person' to act as an instructor. The NZ Transport Agency coordinates this vetting process. If you have any concerns about this, you can discuss this with us - or the NZ Transport Agency - prior to enrolling in the course.

Fee

The course fee is payable in two parts. We require a 50% deposit no later than ten working days prior to your course start date. When we have received your deposit, we'll forward your pre-course material. The balance is payable on the first day of your course. Your course fee covers all aspects of the course, including:

  • Pre-course reading material
  • Tuition
  • Training manuals
  • Road codes
  • Theory test papers
  • New Zealand Drivers' Training Syllabus
  • Mirror and backing board.

Note that you'll also need to apply for the "I" Endorsement through NZ Transport Agency when you pass the course. It's an extra cost which includes application and vetting fees. You may need a medical examination and/or to re-sit your practical driving test. Other additional costs include the cost of receiving your Fit and Proper assessment by the NZ Police.

Driver Instructor courses
