New car sales have for the second month in a row exceeded 2009 volumes.

February has seen both new car and commercial registrations above 2009 volumes, with passenger cars up 13.3% on the same month last year. Commercial vehicle registrations showed a similar trend being up 7.4% on February 2009 and also up 23.1% on January 2010.

For the month of February there were 4,302 new cars and 1,357 new commercial vehicles registered.

Mr Perry Kerr, Chief Executive Officer of the MIA said "these numbers are further proof of the confidence expressed last month - that the motor industry is on a steadily improving path with better results yet to come."

Highlights:

  • It has been a long time since the Corolla (167) was pushed down to fourth place in new model sales for a given month
  • Heading the new model list is the Suzuki Swift (234) and the Mazda3 (197)
  • Holden keeps the flag flying for the big cars slipping into third place (195)
  • The very practical Nissan Qashqai makes a deserved appearance in the top ten models (119) outselling the Mitsubishi Outlander (109)
  • Mazda continue their great start to the calendar year holding a healthy 9.19% market share and third place in total new car sales
