New vehicle registration data for May 2010 shows new car sales continue to improve compared to 2009 figures.

A total of 4616 new cars were registered which is up 16% on May 2009 and ahead of April 2010. For the first five months new car registrations totalled 24,496 units which is a 14% increase over the 2009 period.

Chief Executive Officer of the Motor Industry Association Perry Kerr said "This is now slightly ahead of the industry projection - so we are very happy with these results."

There was also positive news for commercial vehicles which have continued to face a tighter trading market. May registrations of 1,801 vehicles are the best monthly total for the last eleven months and ahead of May 2009 by a massive 37%.

Highlights:

  • Ford (571) edged out Toyota (557) for the top spot in passenger car sales.
  • Thanks to i30 sales Hyundai claimed third place overall with 486 units.
  • YTD positions remain unchanged with Toyota, Holden and Ford the top three brands.
  • Monthly commercial vehicle registrations continue to be dominated by Toyota with just over 40% of the market followed by Ford and Nissan.
  • The Suzuki Swift (249) regained the top selling position in passenger. models for the month with the Hyundai I30 (217) making a giant leap to achieve second place pushing the Toyota Corolla (199) into third spot.
  • Year to date Corolla remains the number one selling passenger model followed by the Suzuki Swift and Holden Commodore.
  • In the commercial sector the Toyota Hilux (477) was top followed by the Nissan Navara (233) and the Toyota Hiace (204).
