Warrant of Fitness (WoF)

A WoF is not just about getting a Warrant of Fitness sticker for your car, motorcycle or trailer. It’s about safety.

A Warrant of Fitness is a regular check to ensure your car is safe to drive on the road. It’s compulsory for light vehicles (cars, station wagons, vans, 4WDs, SUVs, light trucks), trailers and motorcycles.

Right now, at AA Vehicle Testing and Vehicle Inspection sites you can save up to 30 cents per litre with your WoF. This offer is only available at selected sites. This offer is not available at AA Auto Service & Repair Sites.

An independent assessment

Get a reliable Warrant of Fitness from the experts - we'll provide an independent assessment of your car's safety.

It's illegal to drive your vehicle on the road if it doesn't meet the WoF requirements and doesn't display a valid WoF sticker.

As a WoF agent, we're required to follow the car inspection requirements manual (VIRM). These requirements are defined and monitored by NZTA. These are a general safety check and include:

Tyre condition
Brake operation
Structural condition
Lights, doors and windows
Windscreen washers and wipers
Safety belts and airbags
Speedometer, steering and suspension
Exhaust and fuel system

Appointments are not required at our drive-through AA Vehicle Testing Stations and most of our Vehicle Inspection sites. You can pre-book your WoF inspection or get a pre purchase inspection at an AA Vehicle Inspection Centre.

Renewing your WoF

Once your car passes the Warrant of Fitness inspection, you're required to keep it in this condition. The frequency of the check depends on when your car was first registered.

If less than six years ago, you're required to complete a WoF every 12 months. If more than six years ago, you're required to complete a WoF every 6 months.

Pre purchase inspections

A pre purchase inspection is different from a WoF. There are inspection areas not covered under the WoF. If you're purchasing or selling a vehicle we recommend that you reduce your risk and get an independent evaluation of the vehicle.

Our pre purchase inspection includes exterior and interior inspections, driveline, engine, cooling system, suspension and steering, brakes, wheels and tyres and vehicle operation.
