Before you go ensure your car is safe
Check that your warrant of fitness and vehicle registration are up to date before you hit the road.
It's also a good idea to have your car serviced or at least check the oil, water, wiper blades and tyre pressures.
Check the spare tyre and make sure you have a car-jack in good working order.
What to pack
Driver's licence & AA Membership card Keep your current driver's licence handy at all times, and remember your AA Membership card. We'll provide you with roadside assistance if you need it, no matter where you are in New Zealand.
Camera & spare batteries Snow-capped mountains, sparkling beaches, massive glaciers and limestone caves are just some of the scenic photo opportunities in New Zealand.
AA Maps and Guides The easiest way to get to your destination is by following an AA Map or GPS unit. Once there, choose your accommodation from our comprehensive Accommodation Guide or Bed & Breakfast Guide and pick up a Regional Visitor Guide for local information on what to see and do, regional and city maps.
Picnic supplies Pack a blanket, food and drink, plastic cups and utensils, and enjoy a picnic to break up a long road trip. Just remember to take your rubbish with you!
First aid kit A complete first aid kit is a necessity for any vehicle.
Togs & towel With so many great beaches, lakes and rivers throughout the country, packing your togs, towel and a bottle of sunscreen is a must.
For the kids Take plenty of games, books and toys to stop the kids asking.
Music Don't forget to bring your iPod or favourite CDs to make a long drive more enjoyable.
Golf clubs New Zealand has more than 400 golf courses throughout the country, so you're bound to pass one on the way to your destination.
Plastic bags Plastic bags will always come in handy on a road trip - they can be used to store wet togs and towels or rubbish, and can even be used for car sickness when there's no time to stop!
Sunglasses It's important to wear sunglasses while driving when the sun is shining to protect your eyes and aid your vision.
Mobile phone Mobile phones are great in an emergency. Make sure your mobile is charged or take a car charger with you. Remember it's illegal to drive and use a hand-held mobile at the same time so use a hands-free kit when driving.
Water, wet wipes, tissues or paper towels Water is not only good to drink it's handy for rinsing picnic items, washing hands, cleaning cuts and grazes and much more. Use wet wipes for sticky fingers and grubby faces and tissues or handy towels for wiping up spills.
