Wanderlust Festival: feeding mind, body and soul

View the map

This remarkable international event is staged at over half a dozen beautiful sites around the world.

Once a year, the yogis, musicians, meditation instructors, chefs and renowned speakers gather at Lake Taupo.

What’s so attractive about Wanderlust is that it’s all about active inspiration; about pushing the boundaries of whichever of the myriad activities you participate in, to see where it takes you. Surely that’s the essence of travel itself?

And what better place than Taupo in the height of summer? Bike trails, bush walks, swimming . . .

Hooping and slacklining your thing? Thought so. Or yoga and mindfulness? Combine the two with SUP yoga, all conducted on the still lake on your moving paddle board. Now you’re talking. Or not, of course. But you’re actively relaxing, right?

And if your mind is in need of feeding as well as your soul, there are workshops hosted by internationally renowned speakers, across a wide range of topics, all mind, body and spirit-focused. There’s some seriously uplifting food on offer and a handful of happening bands and singers to entertain you at the end of your big day as a yoga slacker.

But, seriously, do you get the picture? No question, it’s a beautiful one. Grab some serenity, or, you know, quietly receive some, open your mind, free your spirit, dance till dawn. Explore your interior in one of the most remarkable exteriors possible.

‘Find your true north’ is the Wanderlust tag line. To a traveller, that shouldn’t just hold great appeal: that should become a must do.

Lake Taupo: the great lake

The biggest lake in Australasia announced its arrival with a bang. Taupo is actually the drowned caldera of a super volcano, the eruption of which, in the first century AD, caused meteorological effects that were noted by sky-gazers as far afield as Rome and China.
