Government gives certainty to Auckland's transport future - AA

The AA welcomes the Government’s announcement of a $10 billion package of major infrastructure projects to meet Auckland’s future transport needs.

The Government’s commitment to the City Rail Loop, a second harbour crossing, the East-West Link and the Auckland Manukau Eastern Transport Initiative (AMETI) will allow the city to move forward with the extensive programme of work that is vital not just for the future of the city, but also for the New Zealand economy overall.

There are also planned improvements to the southern motorway, roading to the airport and a freight corridor in Manukau.

“These will be some of the biggest transport projects New Zealand has ever seen but they are crucial to keeping our biggest city moving into the future,” says AA Motoring Affairs General Manager Mike Noon.

“Auckland faces unprecedented growth and the transport system is already struggling to cope with the current population.

“It is extremely good news to now have certainty around the rail loop, the second harbour crossing and the other major developments. The city can now plan for the future with more certainty.

“Aucklanders have had enough of gridlock on the roads and in the debates around transport. Now it is time to get moving and building the infrastructure that the city needs to thrive.

“The AA is pleased to see that the Government is looking at the projects as a package as well. Getting Auckland moving needs improvement in all modes of transport – roads, rail, ferries, cycling and walking.

“The AA and most Aucklanders will welcome the Government’s commitment to ensuring Auckland has an effective, safe and modern transport system that will benefit everyone for generations to come.”
