We are thinking about buying a near-new electric vehicle. We really like the idea of zero emissions and would like a compact hatchback with decent performance. We do mainly city driving but also occasional long distance trips in the South Island, so a BMW i3 with range extender looks good. But some people say it would be better to wait. Would a low-emission small car like a new or near new VW Polo or Mazda 2 be a better choice?

Hi there,
Personal choice really, naturally there are those "early adopters" who have purchased EV's now and re enjoying using them, then there are those who are waiting till A, there are more here and B, the price has dropped to match those with combustion engines. Currently the small EV's have a limited range and the long range vehicles are very expensive, this will change but like anything new, will take time. If you want a rage near on 600km then a small turbo petrol car will also be a great choice, but not quite like a no emissions EV.
